The monument, which depicts two wings of a plane in rest, commemorated two Lithuanian pilots Steponas (Stephen) Darius and Stasys (Stanley T. Girch) Girėnas who crashed in Germany / Poland after transatlantic flight in July, 1933. The original concept was developed by sculptor Bronius Pundzius in the late 30s, however the monument who won the competition was never built, and the marble stones were stolen. It was finally erected in independent Lithuania in 1933 by sculptor Shlivinskas and architect Linkus // Nuostabi paminklo istorija siekia XX amžiaus 4 dešimtmetį. Žymaus skulptoriaus monumentalisto Broniaus Pundziaus projektas, aplenkęs dešimtis kitų pasiūlymų, laimėjo konkursą pagerbti transatlantinių lakūnų Stepono Dariaus ir Stasio Girėno žygdarbį. Po sovietinės ir hitlerinės okupacijos paminklas nebuvo pastatytas, postamentui surinktus akmenys ištampė, ir atrodė, kad paminklas liks tik brėžiniuose. Bet 10 deš. pradžioje iniciatyvių kauniečių (inžinierius Linkus) dėka paminklas buvusio dainuojančio fontano vietoje visgi iškilo. Lakūnus iš naujo, kiek savaip, pavaizdavo skulptorius Juozas Šlivinskas.

Both pilots decided to fly the Atlantic Ocean in a Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker, a single-engine aircraft used for civil purposes, which was modified for the trip – a stronger engine was included, wings were extended, and the fuel tank was expanded. On May 6, 1933, the airplane was given a new name, 'Lituanica'.
The Lituanica aircraft took off from New York's Floyd Bennett Field on July 15, 1933, at approximately 06.20 local time.
The plane was due to land on July 17, 1933, at around 03:00. However, the Pacemaker ultimately did not reach its destination, as it crashed in Soldin forest (now Poland), which was then under German control. Tragically, both Lithuanian pilots perished in the accident, having been just 650 kilometers away from their final destination.
