The BEST investment I've ever made!

My wife and I recently gave birth to our beautiful daughter here at Tourmaline Birth and Wellness Collective and our experience has completely changed our lives. Tourmaline is not just a facility but a community of simply wonderful people who want nothing more than to bring healthy children into our world.

As a first time father, I was hesitant at first when my wife said she wanted to give a natural out of hospital birth. I had all these concerns and societal views crossing my mind. What if something goes wrong? Are there even doctors here? Is it worth our investment? All I knew was that I wanted the best for my wife and baby. And from the moment we walked through the doors for a meet and greet and by the time we left I was 100% convinced that this was a truly special place.

For our entire pregnancy, and now postpartum care, we have been supported not by fluorescent lights, sterile environments, and unfamiliar faces, but by a warm inviting space and midwifes we have formed real lifelong connections with who share our values. Having access to such a supportive and calming environment during the birthing process was invaluable.

I feel truly grateful for our experience here at Tourmaline and the healthy birth of our daughter. I can't say enough wonderful things about the team here and their level of genuine care. 5/5 10/10 100/100 Thank you!!

I feel compelled to share my deeply troubling experience with Tourmaline Birthing Center to warn others about the potential risks of trusting this facility with your care. It has taken me a while to process the trauma of what this center put me and my husband through and honestly I am still dealing with it 9 months later. At just 9 weeks pregnant, I went in for my first ultrasound and was informed by the sonogram technician that I was having a miscarriage. She diagnosed me with a "missed miscarriage," to which the midwife agreed and explained that I wasn't showing any symptoms which is why I had no idea. Her suggestion was to either wait until my body stayed to recognize the miscarriage (which could come with risk of infection) or that I drink one of their tinctures to "help expel the baby." This was not only devastating, but also completely unsettling.

During the sonogram, when I questioned the miscarriage multiple times, I was met with no suggestions for a second opinion, just a "so sorry but unfortunately this happens" which only added to my growing concern. During the sono technician (which they outsource) even made odd comments about how her equipment was new and not working as well as her old machine, which only further fueled my doubts. Despite this, they moved forward with such a definitive and harsh diagnosis, giving me no room for questioning or proper reassurance. To add insult to injury, they suggested I take the blurry sonogram image to the beach and perform a "ceremony to help heal." This was a bizarre and completely unprofessional recommendation.

Devastated and confused, I followed their advice and tried the tincture. But my body immediately rejected it, causing me to vomit repeatedly. I called the birth center for guidance, and they simply told me there was nothing else they could do and advised me to go to the ER. Thank God I did, because it was at the ER where I found out that I was *not* miscarrying—my baby was alive and growing.

The emotional toll this experience took on me and my husband is beyond words. We had gone through the trauma of grieving a miscarriage, informed our family and friends, and even told my employer. It took away any joy we could have had in sharing our pregnancy news, and we were left with nothing but regret and disbelief.

What really disturbs me, though, is how the birth center handled this situation. Not only were they dismissive and unhelpful, but their failure to provide proper care could have caused serious harm if I had continued to follow their advice. After the fact, one of the midwives called to offer an apology, but Josie (the midwife) also promised free services to make up for the trauma—and never followed through. This lack of follow-up speaks volumes about their lack of empathy, care, and responsibility.

I want to make it clear that this review isn't just about one mistake; it's about the negligent, irresponsible way this birth center operates. I experienced multiple complications during my pregnancy including issues with my placenta. I can’t help but wonder if it had anything to do with the tincture. What makes me think this is because when I did call the midwife she made a troubling statement telling me not to worry, that it wouldn’t affect my baby or my placenta. Looking back, this is insanely troubling. My baby ended up being born premature due to a failing placenta and suffered from IUGR. I hope my story serves as a cautionary tale to anyone considering birthing here. Please, for the safety of your baby and your own peace of mind, I strongly urge you to reconsider.

This birthing center where I had my first baby in May aligns with all of my values and passion as a holistic nutritionist. It is a one stop for everything from your birthing classes to much needed treatments like massage, accupuncture and yoga. The midwives spend hours with you at each appointment and you are provided with incredible care. They provide you with all the information for you to make informed decisions about your birth plan and experience. Birthing out of the hospital is safe and the US has the highest hospital mortality rate, so empower yourself to learn more about other alternatives. I highly recommend birthing here or at least giving it a chance because our babies deserve this type of support and care.

I am so happy that I chose to give birth to my first baby at Tourmaline! I knew I didn’t want to give birth in a hospital but didn’t feel ready for a home birth yet, so I chose to go to a birth center and I’m so glad I found this place!
There are so many amazing things I want to say about this place.

I started my care here around 8 weeks pregnant. I love that you’re able to do a payment plan and when you sign up they give you a book that they put together full of so much great information to help you navigate every trimester. They have an ultrasound tech come once a month, I chose to only have 2 ultrasounds (one in the beginning and one at 20 weeks) and the midwives are so respectful of your decisions.

My husband came with me to every appointment, and we got to know all of the midwives and student midwives there as we rotated who we saw. We love everyone there and would have been happy with whoever ended up being at our birth, but we were excited that we had the owner Josie at our birth and she was the one God knew we needed.

One of the biggest reasons I recommend taking this route is the preventative care you receive, all of our prenatal appointments were on average 90 minutes. They kindly answered all of our questions and shared so much great advice that set us up for the best birth possible. I had multiple friends that were pregnant the same time and they were blown away when I told them how much time we got at our appointments, we learned things they were never told and we were never rushed. The midwives focused on good nutrition, spinning babies, how my body felt, and prepared me mentally for giving birth. They also have a 5 week birth prep class that we learned so much from! I took a few prenatal yoga classes as well.

Fast forward to the birth of our daughter, without going into all the details I had an amazing experience. My baby had her hand up by her head and Josie knew exactly what to do to help her come out when it was taking longer than expected. I share this because people always asked me “what ifs”, these midwives are so highly trained to know what to do, she acted calmly, there were no crazy interventions. My husband caught our baby and put her right on my chest and it was one of the best moments of my life.

The postpartum visits they do at your home in the beginning so you can heal and don’t have to leave your house. The care I received for myself and my baby the following 12 weeks was just as incredible as before she was born.

I know this review is long, but after receiving almost a year of care there I have so much to say. If you’re on the fence about doing a birthing center over a hospital, I recommend going to Tourmaline. It was one of the best decisions of my life and now I get to be part of such a beautiful community that is like family to us now

Tourmaline offers the best prenatal care a woman can get in San Diego! After having a terrible hospital experience with my first birth I knew the next time I wanted to work with a birth center instead. After researching and interviewing multiple midwives and birth centers I found Tourmaline offered the most comprehensive care for you, your family, and your newborn. You also continue to receive care for up to 6 weeks after birth for you and your baby. The team of midwives is amazing and each has their own special touch that they add to your care. They bring a wealth of knowledge and make sure you know exactly what your options are in every situation. I ended up having the most amazing home birth and I owe it all to the team at Tourmaline. I felt safe and cared for all the way through my time with them. If you want an amazing birth team to work with look no further than Tourmaline!

I am so fortunate to have stumbled across Tourmaline in my search for a new provider. I was with an OB up until I was 20 weeks when my husband and I decided that we wanted more for the birth of our first son.
From the moment we entered tourmaline we knew the care we were about to receive was second to none. When I was with my OB my appointments were 15 minutes or less and my husband was not encouraged to be there, it felt cold and I felt alone. At tourmaline they did everything they could to include my husband in our visits and during labor (he delivered our son! ?)
Tourmaline helped us create the experience of a lifetime and I recommend them to anyone.

Tourmaline is THE BEST place to welcome your new baby! I had two of my babies there and both experiences were amazing. They go above and beyond for you during your entire pregnancy. They support your overall health and babies health rather than just checking a box like a regular OB would. So much is included in your care like, prenatal yoga, a massage, all blood tests and ultrasounds, and so much more! The birthing rooms are VERY well designed (coming from an interior designer) and comforting with a bed, a large tub and sprayer, private bathrooms and one that has more natural light and one that is more moody so you can choose which atmosphere you prefer! I highly recommend!
